How To Keep Your Wedding Guest List Under Control

Everyone that visits our scenic wedding venue near Knoxville immediately falls in love with the vintage facilities, breathtaking views, and gorgeous landscaping. It's an amazing place for a small wedding of 100 or fewer guests. Many brides and grooms get their hearts set on saying "I do"  at Country Jewell, and sometimes that means making some cuts to the guest list.

Don't let yourself feel guilty about limiting the guest list. This is your special day, and if you want to invite only your closest family and friends, you have every right to do that. Another bonus to keeping the guest list at a minimum is the fact that you'll be spending less money to entertain everyone.

We've put together a few tips to help you get started on cutting down an overwhelming guest list.

The First Draft
The best way to get started is to make 4 different lists: the brides, her parents, the groom's, and his parents. This first "fantasy draft" of guests will hopefully contain a lot of the same names once they are all four combined. After deleting duplicate names, it's time to start prioritizing. It might help to give each of your parents a number to keep their list limited to from the beginning.

Ask Some Questions
If you still have too many names on the list once duplicates are marked off, the following questions can help you decide where to make the first cuts. If the answer to any of them is "no" then those names are good candidates for being taken off the list.
  • Have you talked to this person in the past year?
  • Do you spend time together outside of work or work-related functions?
  • Have they met your fiance? (Do they even know his/her name?)
  • Do you know them personally? (Parents' friends you've never met or don't know well can be crossed off.)
  • If they are distant family, do you speak to them on a regular basis?
  • Would you be upset if they didn't invite you to their wedding?
  • Will they make your wedding more fun?

Skip The "Plus One's"
You are not obligated to invite a stranger to your wedding just so your friend has a date for the night. If your friend isn't married, then their boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't have to be on your guest list. The exceptions to this are if they are engaged or have been in a serious relationship for an extended period of time.

Only Invite Adults
Another way to cut down on the number of people attending your wedding is to make it an "adults only" event. Let's face it, some children may have fun at a wedding, but if their attendance means there's less roof for grown-ups you'd like to spend your special day with, this is a good place to make a cut. If you have friends with adult children that you don't know well, it's okay to leave them off the list too.

Backup Plans
It is not uncommon to create an A-list of people that are invited to your wedding, and a B-list of people you'd like to invite if any of the A-listers cannot attend. (No one needs to know about this B-list except the two of you!) If you have a lot of names on that B-list that you're not thrilled about excluding, plan to have a casual get-together after the wedding day to celebrate with them.

No matter what you do, there are always critics. It might not be a bad idea to cultivate your "We've decided to keep it small because..." statement so you're not put too much on the spot if someone asks why they are not invited.

Once you get a look at the breathtaking beauty surrounding our rustic wedding venue near Knoxville, you'll realize that it is completely worth keeping your guest list under 100 so that you can get married here. 6 Tips To Keep Your Wedding Guest List To A Minimum

Our charming scenic wedding venue near Knoxville is idyllic for a smaller wedding of up to 100 guests. It can sometimes be difficult to keep your guest list to a minimum once everyone hears about your engagement. If you are wanting to have a small, intimate ceremony, Country Jewell has come up with a few tips that may help you to narrow down your guest list without any guilt.

Decide on a Budget...
...and stick to it! A large guest list always means a bigger price tag for a wedding. Many people will understand the need for a small guest list if you make it clear that you are trying to stick to a budget. It's really none of their business how much you are spending, but if it quiets their complaints, it may be worth mentioning.

Start with 4 Lists
The following people should make a list of people that they feel should be invited to the wedding: the bride, the groom, the bride's parents, and the groom's parents. It will help the process to let your parents know the number of guests you are aiming for. Each list should highlight the people that absolutely must be invited to the wedding, and the rest of the names should be listed in order of importance. These lists then go to the bride & groom for approval. (It's your wedding, so you get the final say!)

The first step is easy. Mark off any duplicate names between lists. Next, write down everyone's "must have" guests, then evaluate how much space you are left with. To begin narrowing down the rest of the names, ask yourself a few questions. The following are a great place to start.

  • How often do you see them?
  • When was the last time that you saw them? If over a year, they can be marked off.
  • Do you see them socially outside of work or are they just office acquaintances?
  • Are they your parent's friends? Long time family friends are a possible maybe, but if you don't know them, they don't have to come.

Drop the Plus One's
If you are trying to keep your guest list small, a great place to cut your numbers down is the "plus one" option. You should invite spouses and the significant other of anyone that is in a long-term relationship. If they are only casually dating, you don't have to allow them to bring a guest. If they are worried, assure them that there will be other single guests at the wedding too. There is no reason that one of your real friends should be cut from the guest list to invite someone that may not be around next week.

Have an "Adults Only" Wedding
This can be a touchy subject for some, but this wedding is your party and it is perfectly acceptable for you to not allow guests to bring their children. The key is to give them enough advance notice so that they have plenty of time to make alternate plans for their kids on the day of your wedding. If you have a lot of people with small children, hiring a sitter to keep all of the kids during the wedding might be a wonderful option for everyone.

Hold the Wedding on a Weekday
This can be a big money-saver. Many wedding venues offer a discounted rate if you have your wedding on a non-traditional day. Weekends are a lot more convenient for people, so having your wedding on a Monday-Friday could make many unable to attend, keeping your guest list down.

Have a Destination Wedding
This is a perfect way to keep the guest list to a minimum and not feel guilty about not inviting some people. After all, you wouldn't want them to have to pay extra to make the trip. Country Jewell is an excellent spot for a destination wedding. We are conveniently located less than ten minutes off of I-75, putting us very close to Knoxville, Norris Lake, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg. There are plenty of places for your guests to stay while they are in the area.

Don't let yourself feel guilty about leaving people off of your guest list. We completely understand the benefits of hosting a small wedding, and most reasonable people will understand too. If leaving some people out is really bothering you, maybe you could arrange a gathering for the ones that didn't make the cut to celebrate with you after the honeymoon. It's your special day, so in the end, make sure that you do what makes you the happiest.
